Cheer Canada – Team Canada Physician

Cheer Canada is seeking applications for the Team Canada Physician position for 2027 and 2028 seasons.

The successful applicant will provide physician support to Cheer Canada’s national team programs, working collaboratively with the Integrated Support Team (IST) Lead, medical team members, coaches, and administration. The role supports athlete health and safety through medical consultation, injury management, emergency preparedness, and continuity of care at training camps and competitions, with a primary focus on attending the World Championships in Orlando, Florida.

Core Responsibilities

  • Emergency Planning: Assist in developing, reviewing, and overseeing emergency action plans for national team camps, clinics, and events, in collaboration with the IST Lead and event medical personnel.
  • Medical Consultation & Clearance: Be available to advise on medical concerns and decisions affecting national team athletes. Provide medical clearance and return-to-play decisions following significant injury, drawing on assessments and recommendations from treating practitioners and IST members.
  • Collaborative Medical Decision-Making: Encourage feedback and input from medical team members and provide final physician approval for on-field medical decisions. Support clear communication and coordinated care within the medical team.
  • Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs): Oversee the annual TUE process, including preparation and submission of required applications to the International Cheer Union and Sport Integrity Canada. Track applications and confirm that all necessary submissions have been received and accepted.
  • Emergency Medical Files: Prepare and maintain current emergency medical files for all athletes and staff travelling with Cheer Canada. Coordinate with the IST Lead to ensure that relevant information is securely maintained and accessible to authorized medical personnel when required.
  • Emergency Care & Discharge: Communicate essential medical information to emergency medical personnel when an emergency occurs. Support continuity of care and ensure appropriate arrangements for safe discharge and follow-up.
  • Medical Content Review: Assist in preparing and reviewing medical information and resources circulated under the Cheer Canada name to ensure that content is accurate, appropriate, and consistent with athlete health and safety priorities.
  • Professional Standards & Confidentiality: Maintain professional boundaries, ethical practice, and confidentiality. Ensure that medical team members working under the physician’s clinical direction uphold these standards and handle medical information securely.
  • Camp & Competition Attendance: Attend national team camps, clinics, and events as directed throughout the season, with a primary commitment to attending the World Championships in Orlando, Florida. Coordinate availability and medical coverage with the IST Lead and Cheer Canada administration.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Professional Status: A physician holding a current licence to practice medicine and in good standing with a Canadian provincial or territorial medical regulatory authority.
  • Sport Medicine Experience: Experience caring for athletes, with knowledge of sport-related injuries, concussion management, medical clearance, and return-to-play decision-making. Sport and exercise medicine training or certification is an asset.
  • Emergency Care: Experience assessing acute injuries and medical emergencies, developing emergency plans, and coordinating care with emergency medical services.
  • Anti-Doping Knowledge: Familiarity with therapeutic use exemptions and the medical documentation required to support applications, or a demonstrated ability to develop this knowledge.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary support team and communicate clearly with athletes, coaches, medical practitioners, and administration.
  • Athlete Welfare: A commitment to athlete-centered care, Safe Sport, inclusive practice, and sound clinical judgement.
  • Records & Professional Practice: Ability to maintain accurate, confidential medical records and practice within applicable professional, privacy, and jurisdictional requirements, including during international travel.
  • Availability: Availability for consultation throughout the appointment and attendance at required camps and events, particularly the World Championships in Orlando, Florida.
  • Language: The ability to communicate in both English and French is an asset.

Compensation: This is a volunteer position, with a $2,000 stipend and all travel expenses will be covered.
