Re: Changes to All Star U6 Scoring & U8 Prep for 2021/22 and beyond

Under 6 divisions listed in the Cheer Canada All Star Division List, as well as Under 8 All Star Prep divisions, will be adjudicated on adjusted score sheets that support the recommendations of the All Star Committee & Performance Cheer Committee to better align adjudication with the Cheer Canada Long-Term Development framework. The adjusted score sheets are an iteration of the 2020/21 Novice score sheet that focuses on the evaluation of key scoring considerations without assigning numeric scores.

    U6 Novice Summary of Changes:

  • U6 Novice divisions will not be evaluated in Stunt Execution, although the category is included on the scoresheet.

  • Tumbling Execution scoring considerations have been added.

U6/U8 Prep & U6 All Star Summary of Changes:

  • Score Sheets that were used in the 2020/21 season have been adjusted to a checkmark evaluation system that does not assign scores. All scoring categories remain the same.

  • Teams will be evaluated as “Below Average, Average – Above Average, Excellent” pertaining to the scoring considerations in each category.

U6 Performance Cheer Summary of Changes:

  • Score Sheets that were used in the 2020/21 season have been adjusted to a checkmark evaluation system that does not assign scores. All scoring categories remain the same.

  • Teams will be evaluated as “Below Average, Average – Above Average, Excellent” pertaining to the scoring considerations in each category.

    Rationale:

The Under 6 age division encompasses the youngest athletes in the sport of cheerleading who are most often just being introduced to the robust skill set of cheer. The Under 8 Prep division is identified as another entry level division. To align with the Cheer Canada LTD and promote athlete longevity in the sport, the focus for Under 6 & U8 Prep athletes should be fundamental skill development and enjoyment of the sport while still recognizing the performance aspect of cheer.

A non-numeric adjudication system will allow young athletes to be evaluated on the core tenets of the sport while keeping the focus on age appropriate skill sets versus intense competition. The checkmark feedback provides a clear communication tool to young coaches, parents new to the sport and the young athletes, promoting growth and development in the core skill sets.

A non-ranked adjudication system provides a pathway into the ranking and evaluation side of the sport, while focusing on the enjoyment of performance for this young age group.
